Today the Brandenburg Gate has become the symbol of a reunified Berlin. It is the only remaining gate of a series of gates through which one could have formerly entered Berlin. When it was originally built around 1788, its intention was that of peace; it has since then become one of Europe’s most famous landmarks.

The Brandenburg Gate consists of twelve columns, six to each side forming five passageways. Additionally, a Quadriga (a chariot drawn by four horses from Roman mythology) can be found on top of the Brandenburg Gate facing the east. The Quadriga was originally installed in 1793 and has since been dislocated by Napoleon when he invaded Berlin back in 1806 and was ultimately destroyed during the last days of the Second World War. The Quadriga has been installed without a cross and an eagle as its original form back in 1958.

Amazingly, the Brandenburg Gate remained closed for almost 30 years. It was only the downfall of the Berlin Wall that rekindled any chances of reopening the Brandenburg Gate. Allowing everyone to truly cherish, enjoy and admire the Brandenburg Gate as the symbol that it has taken upon itself in representing not only a more unified Germany but a more unified world.

The Gate’s design is based upon the Propylaea, which was the gateway to the Acropolis in Athens, Greece. As one can now truly see that the origin of the Brandenburg design is based on Roman and Greek influences. In addition it is also fascinating to discover that the Brandenburg Gate has never changed in design, shape or form. Time schedules during the week (Monday to Thursday) range from 5 to midnight; on Fridays, lines run until 2 o’clock in the morning while on Saturday, to facilitate the many party goers of the city, the metro doesn’t close and remains active throughout the night. A ticket for a single journey costs 1euro 30 and there are several other solutions like subscriptions to one or more days. A good isea is to plan your travels and understand what type of ticket is more convenient for your specific needs. I find the T10 carnet to be very useful; a discounted ticket valid for 10 journeys, at the price of 7euros 20.

There is also the option of taking the bus; the slowest option due to the city traffic, but still to be considered as they cover vast ground including those areas far out of reach of the underground. Sant Feliu Church

This Church was built in the XIIth century on the grave of Holy Félix, the African. This Church is also famous thanks to the ‘Lleona’, one of the symbols of the city. This is a medieval statue representing a lioness lying on a column. The legend of this lioness is that every passer-by has to kiss her in order to receive luck. This statue is in fact a copy as the original one is kept at the Museu d’Art.

The funny thing is the Arabic baths of Girona were not built by the Arabs. Their name results from decorations inspired by the Muslim world. These baths are a mixture of Roman public baths and oriental decoration.
